- Overview: The Shadowrun mercenary sourcebook. The first part of the book gives background material on what it is like to be a merc, written as an article by a well-known merc. The next section is more useful to gadget-lovers: in a similar fashion to the Street Samurai Catalog, this provides all sorts of gear, intended for mercenaries. Naturally, this is also useful to just about any shadowrunner who wants a good gun. In addition to new weapons, things such as climbing gear, military armor, and communications systems are also featured, as are a few new vehicles. Then comes the rules clarifications. These provide optional rules to enhance your game (most are very useful), and rules pertaining to some of the new equipment featured in the book. The final section is a huge equipment table, listing just about all gear officially released by FASA up until early 1994, useful as a quick reference.
- Rating: 7.2
- Comment: "Get some people who know both guns and the system rather than bootlegging C-Punk’s already garbled munchkin guns."

BackCover Blurb Edytuj
The Streets are a violent place, as dangerous as any battlefield. And the lessons men and women learn on those fields of fire can save their reputations - and their lives - in any combat situation.<P> Fields of Fire is the mercenary sourcebook for Shadowrun. Information on how to act like a professional Merc, and pages of new weapons, support gear, and optional combat-rules clarifications and expansions make this book something no Merc, or Runner, should live without.
At a Glance Edytuj
Presented within Fields of Fire is what it is to be a mercenary, and how they fit into the world of Shadowrun. Also presented are Mil-Spec weapons (up to and including light tanks), and rules for such weapons. Added on is a `complete' equipment list, of all equipment published in Shadowrun Second Edition, Street Samurai (Second Edition), Shadowtech, The Rigger Black Book, Virtual Realities, Shadowbeat, The Grimore (Second Edition) and the Neo-Anarchists Guide to Real Life, as well as Fields of Fire.

"Street Index" badly formated - it wraps the line.

Range of microwave designators should be "8,000m", not "8,000km". Range of Radar Designators should be "10,000m+", not "10,000km+".
- Page 77
Column B, 2nd paragraph. "pXX" should be "p86".

The modifier for called shots with the Smartlink/II system should be +2 not +4.
The section of the added advanced rules really answered a lot of the questions that I had had before this book was published. The fictional part about the mercenary Matador really is an interesting read as well as a good prototype for a merc char and the merc lifestyle vs that of a street sam. When I think of character background stories, I think of Matador. I liked the tone of the way the new rules were added. Expressed in a "feel free to modify/ignore/adopt" method. Fields of Fire is chock full of goodies to go shopping for, but IMO it doesn't make SS obsolete (though SS is lessened) I like the stats given on the eq, the pics, and the fiction added on the side. The artwork is great, and it was about time that there were some good pics of trolls. The book is composed in a logical way, so it's simple to find things like that rule about low laser target designators. I don't know if I agree with some of the prices or the introduction of a smartgun II. I wish that there were some lessening of the Guardian pistol and the Barretta sniper. All said it's one of my favorite books.
